The goal of advanced nursing education is to "open the mind" of the nurse leader. It is essential to learn the knowledge skills and attitudes that comprise the AONL Nurse Executive Competencies. It is also essential to understand personal strengths and weaknesses through assessment and self-reflection.

"Your example, even more than your words, will be an eloquent lesson to the world"
Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat
Leadership is best accomplished when team members are encouraged and mentored to learn, grow and contribute from their own strengths and talents. This leadership process begins with a journey to personal leadership. Taking a hard and accurate look at oneself through our own eyes, and the eyes of others who we trust to give us honest feedback of how we can improve. To embark on this journey, a leader needs to pack some essential supplies: humility, vulnerability, and resilience. Successful Nurse executive leaders are on this never-ending journey on a quest for continuous improvement in patient safety, quality of care, and employee satisfaction.

It is important to be forward-thinking and planning. The nursing profession is struggling to fill positions and this problem will continue for the for the foreseeable future. Building on the on the competencies I have learned through my DNP education is important to me both personally and professionally. I will continue too seek opportunities for growth, hone leadership skills and engage nursing staff, both new and experienced. I will seek to foster true collaboration through careful listening, strategic planning and teamwork. My goal is to lift up others to help them realize their fullest potential while improving patient care and organizational financial stability through the recruitment and retention of nursing staff.
Through self-reflection, and seeking feedback, I will look for opportunities to attend conferences and become active in a professional leadership organization as I seek to grow my leadership skills and healthcare organizational knowledge.
AONL Competency Exemplars

Self-assessment and self-reflection on AONL Competency proficiency, and areas of emerging competence are important guideposts to focus upon along the nursing leadership journey.
Professionalism
NUR 905 offered opportunities to refine this competency to a higher level. Professionalism requires emotional intelligence, self-control, knowledge and wisdom. Professionalism is recognized by others as an attribute that conveys trust and accountability and this is developed through self-reflection, education, and seeking the feedback of others. Seeking mentors and professional organization affiliations are currently methods to continue to learn.
Leadership
Leadership Practicum NUR905 introduced Sir Ernest Shackleton and led to growth in the assessment of the needs of novice nurse managers and the importance of mentorship and coaching in key AONL competencies for success in leading a team for the nurse manager who requires growth in staff relationship building. Strength of character and experience are a solid foundation for this competency.
Communication and Relationship Management
The importance of relationship building is stressed in NUR 908- Healthcare Policy. The need to have influence at the policy and legislative level requires clear, concise communication and an opportunity to be heard by those who have the ability to vote for change. Experience in relationship building and interprofessional collaboration are strengths that are valuable in today's nursing profession.
Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment
Knowledge of the complexity of the healthcare environment is a key pillar of effective leadership. NUR 908 motivates DNP students to draw upon their nursing expertise and experience in many different healthcare setting which provides a unique and comprehensive perspective for the nurse leader who is committed to quality and safety. As a nurse leader, this will be a focus of my future growth. Attendance at conferences and seminars will be sought.
Business Skills and Principles
Nurse leaders must rely on data from regulatory agencies to ensure compliance as they manage their units and departments. Data principle's, managing departmental budgets, and accountability are as important as nursing knowledge. The nurse leader is directly accountable for publicly reported data and the impact the data has on the healthcare organization. Emerging competence in business skills and principles will be a motivator for future mentorship opportunities I will seek to gain greater proficiency. Potential certification in quality through the National Association of Healthcare Quality will be sought.
